Chavela’s x Franklin Park

PLAN DATE: WEDS / JUL. 25

PLAN DETAILS:

Once you step inside, there’s no denying Chavela’s vibrant style. This Crown Heights restaurant has pops of colors brimming out of every corner (from its multicolored bar tile to its bright red walls), a highly detailed tin plated steel ceiling, and authentic Mexican art (including a massive Día de Muertos sculpture and traditional clay masks). It also has easily the best Mexican cuisine in the neighborhood. Between their nopales tacos (with cactus, pico de gallo, queso fresco, and avocado), Mexican corn truffle quesadillas, and pescado a la veracruzana (which is tilapia baked in a banana leaf with olives, capers, tomatoes, sweet peppers, and rice), you’ll wonder how you ever settled on something as basic as Chipotle.

After dinner, head over to Franklin Park for something to quench your thirst. This former garage isn’t afraid of showing off its bones, with an exposed ceiling, exposed walls, and a remodeled garage door that opens up to a fairly massive courtyard (with string lights and weathered turquoise blue tables). However, if you’d rather be a bit more active tonight, play a few rounds in the game of your choosing at their attached mini arcade (just don’t get too competitive, as this is a date after all). And though the beer selection may not necessarily rival the local competition, Franklin Park goes for the gold with its atmosphere.

idk tip: Start things off with their ridiculously good guacamole de trucha (with smoked trout, pico de gallo, and morita chile salsa). It’s an elevated spin on a traditional favorite.

idk tip: Assuming the drinking makes you hungry, don’t stress. Franklin Park is literally attached to Dutch Boy Burgers (which is itself heaven).
