Favela Cubana x Carmen, to Havana & Back at The PUBLIC

Drag your date away from the chaos of Washing Square and tuck into Favela Cubana, a homey spot that feels like a neighborhood hang—if your neighborhood was in Cuba, that is. The interior is on-theme and quirky with giant paintings by Cuban artists, congas as bar stools, bright yellow placemats, and a wall full of the all-important Cuban rum. Said rum is used in their fruity and strong cocktails, but if you’re not in the mood for a caipirinha or Mambo Martini, they also have a small selection of wine and beer. On the menu is Brazilian and Cuban traditional dishes from ceviche to yucca fries to Ropa Vieja.

Dive deeper into Cuban history and relive your favorite opera with Carmen, to Havana & Back. The show retells the iconic opera in 1950’s Havana and invites all attendees to meet the theme with appropriate clubwear. The limited show run is put on by Variety Life Productions at the PUBLIC Hotel through their PUBLIC Arts program, which is dedicated to bringing avant-garde, multimedia productions to stage. This show is no different—with an immersive, 360-degree staging of live music and dancing, plus all the passion, jealousy, love, and betrayal a good date night needs (okay, maybe leave the jealousy and betrayal to the actors).
