Puerto Viejo x BoTNYC

Start your evening with an early dinner at Puerto Viejo. This Dominican eatery has a funky saloon vibe, with dark wood walls, lighter wood tables and chairs, and colorful abstract art adorning the walls. Awaiting you on the menu isn’t Western fare, however, but Dominican favorites that are, for the most part, made in-house with the delicious taste to prove it. Start off with a fresh juice or smoothie and tostones (aka thick plantain chips), and you almost won’t care about your entree. But you should care, because the various meat stews or roasted fish dishes (and one vegan bowl!) come out with a great price and a perfect portion. Flan and tres leches cake are great for sharing or definitely not sharing to finish off the meal.

After dinner head to The Way Station, a self-proclaimed “nerd bar” for something that definitely fits the theme: Biology on Tap. This two and a half hour presentation delivers scientific trivia and talks to keep you learning while you keep drinking. The science is free and the drinks are pretty reasonable, with a wide selection of beers on tap and some rightfully geeky cocktails (Sonic Screwdriver, anyone?) Past events have included talks on parasites, microscopic life, and the secrets inside the brain, so get ready to bond with your date over how tiny and weird bacteria and cells are.
