Uglyduckling x Wolf & Deer

The building at 166 Smith Street stood for years as an outcast amongst its neighbors—it was even named one of the ugliest buildings in all of New York. But today, Uglyduckling celebrates the change, innovation, and beauty of Brooklyn’s past and present. Offering a selection of American classics, you’ll find chicken and waffles or a brisket burger (with the secret “ugly” sauce) served alongside elevated dishes like whole baby chicken with rosemary & garlic creamed potatoes. FYI, they feature a “handsome” happy hour including small plates for $10 and under, Monday—Friday from 4-7 p.m.

Next, head to wine bar Wolf & Deer, which offers an ever-changing, creative cocktail menu, snacks, and an interesting crowd. Drinks are named after children’s books like The Giving Tree and Oh, The Places You’ll Go, and during happy hour (every day until 8 p.m.), they’re only $10. There are also daily specials like 3 wine tastings for $7 or 6 oysters and two glasses of bubbles for $20…the list goes on. The interior is beautiful with lots of exposed brick and a big U-shaped bar. It’s small, but very cozy, and creates for a nice space to actually hear what your date has to say instead of having to shout over loud, overplayed music.
